Tenuta Dell'Ornellaia - Massetino 2022
Masseto is one of the most famous Super Tuscan wines, made entirely from Merlot by Tenuta dell'Ornellaia . Ornellaia is located in the Bolgheri appellation, in Tuscany , Italy . The company was founded in 1981 by Marquis Lodovico Antinori. From 2002 to 2005 the estate was co-owned by Robert Mondavi and Marchesi De Frescobaldi, but since 2005 Frescobaldi has had exclusive ownership. In Ornellaia, the concept of environmental sustainability, understood as the use of the natural fertility of the soil, can be identified in various practices and limited measures implemented in the vineyards, with the aim of promoting the biodiversity of cultivated species. The director of the Masseto estate is Axel Heinz .
Massetino is the " second wine ", born after the selection made for Masseto but which shares the same identity. After destemming and light pressing, the grapes were transferred into concrete vats by gravity, without pumping. Each batch of the vineyard was vinified separately. Fermentation took place spontaneously with indigenous yeasts, with two to three pumping overs per day and racking if necessary. The grapes macerated for between 21 and 25 days in vats. Malolactic fermentation took place made in barrels, with 50% new oak. After the first 12 months of aging , the wine was blended and reintroduced into barrels for 3 more months , before being bottled.
