Located 40 kilometers from Bordeaux on the left bank of the Garonne, Château Lamothe was built in the 16th century behind a Merovingian fort. The history of the estate is punctuated by that of its many successive owners, who divided it up, sold it and shared it according to their acquisitions. In 1855, however, he enjoyed notable success and achieved the rank of Second Cru Classé. But it was not until the 20th century that he returned to stability: in 1961, Jean Despujols bought eight hectares of vines on gravel and clay and since then, the vineyard has always been managed by the same family. Since 1989, his son Guy Despujols has been in charge of the property. The very small volumes collected make it possible to follow the harvest very precisely and to vinify the wines without settling, very gently. The particularity of Lamothe is the privileged location of the castle. In all directions the gaze is lost to the horizon. Indeed, the vineyard is located to the west of the village of Sauternes, overlooking the Ciron valley, very close to Guiraud, la Tour Blanche and Filhot. The climatic balance is exceptional here, due to intense sunshine cooled by a wind that is still present. All the elements are there to allow the grapes to be affected by noble rot, the famous botrytis. The wines of Château Lamothe are rich and corpulent. Due to the quantity of Semillon used, they offer a superb color, a characteristic acacia nose and develop aromas of peach and pear in the mouth. A magnificent wine, perfectly balanced. Note, the Domaine sells a second wine, the Tourelles de Lamothe.
