Château Haut-Brion was, so to speak, first in everything. Dean of Bordeaux wines, its history begins in 1553 when Jean de Pontac bought the fiefdom of Haut-Brion. A century later his grandson created the notion of cru at a time when most wines were sold anonymously. Already concerned with quality, he opened up to the science of winemaking and practiced topping, racking and became a fan of aging in barrels. Later, in 1855, this Graves logically integrated the rank of the premier crus classified alongside the Médoc. In the meantime, the Château has known illustrious owners including Commynes, Beyermann, and especially Talleyrand, all driven by the same concern for quality. In 1935 it was bought by Clarence Dillon, and currently remains the property of his descendants. Centuries of success have not dampened the desire for innovation: in the 1960s the estate was the first to use new stainless steel fermentation tanks, more recently it was the first to seek the improvement of its grape varieties by clonal selection. Jean-Bernard Delmas, the current director, continues today this quest for the quality which characterizes this magnificent estate so well.
Château Bahans Haut Brion is the old name of the second wine. Today his name is Clarence Haut Brion.
