MASSETO - Tenuta dell Ornellaia IGT 1997

Founded in 1981, near the picturesque village of Bolgherie in Tuscany, the Tenuta dell'Ornellaia estate produces great Italian wines, the flagship of which is Masseto. It is the hill of Masseto, due to its soil rich in clay and its exceptional climatic conditions, gave rise to the planting of a vineyard of 7 hectares of Merlot from which the famous wine of the name of the hill will be produced: Masseto; name which was given to this place because the clods of earth are as hard as masses.

The harvest is divided into two parts: that of the "high" Massetto which begins in early September and that of the "central" Masseto around September 20th. The bunches are strictly picked by hand and the grapes are sorted manually so that no plant part can enter the vats. This meticulous work is done only by women. During this fermentation, a daily tasting is carried out the first year to control the evolution of the wine in each of the vats.

The high concentration of clay in which Merlot is king often means that it can be compared with our Pétrus which shares these two same characteristics. 24 months of barrel aging with blending after the first 12 months. It is necessary to add 12 months of rest minimum before marketing.
