RIJK'S - Touch of Oak - Pinotage 2016
Rijk’s Estate is located in Tulbagh, situated 120km north east of Cape Town and 90 km east of the Atlantic coast in a Mediterranean climate area. Cold winters with rain and snow, and warm dry summers with plenty of wind. The valley is surrounded by mountains, resulting in cool nights.
Rijk’s first plantings were in 1997. In 2010, ten years after the first harvest, they removed all Cabernet Franc, Cabernet Sauvignon and Merlot so as to concentrate on the cultivars best suited to the farm: Chenin Blanc, Pinotage and Shiraz.
100% Pinotage, a cross of Pinot Noir and Cinsault. A 48-hour cold maceration period was given prior to fermentation to extract colour and fruit. Extraction during fermentation took place by pumping the juice over the skins 3 times per day. Skins were gently pressed before fermented dry. MLF took place in barrels. Matured for 18 months in 25% 2nd fill, 50% 3rd fill and 25% 4th fill French oak barrels.
