GLENGOYNE - 10 ans - 40%
Glengoyne Distillery is a distillery located in the Southern Highlands. It sits at the foot of the hill of Dumgoyne, a landmark volcanic hill visible from Glasgow.
The business began life in 1820 as an illicit distillery at Burnfoot Farm. It was set in a miniature glen away from the gaze of the excisemen, complete with a hidden waterfall. Glengoyne gained a licence in 1833 as Glenguin of Burnfoot, a name kept until 1907. The distillery was re-built in its current form in 1966, tripling capacity to meet rising demand. In 2003, Ian Macleod Distillers Ltd bought the company from the Edrington Group.
With no peat in the soil around the farm, local fuel was used to dry the barley. This established Glengoyne's unpeated style. An extended fermentation of the wort is said to bestow a nutty character to the whiskies. Glengoyne also claims to have the slowest stills in Scotland, run at comparitively low temperatures. This contributes to the malt's light body and smoothness.
The distillery began using casks from the booming Sherry industry in 1870 – initially this was a cost-cutting exercise, but became an essential component of the whisky's character.
The Glengoyne 10 year-old is known for its spicy, smooth taste with a marked Sherry cask influence.
