CLOS MOGADOR - Com Tu 2017
Clos Mogador is located in the Priorat appellation of Catalonia in Spain. In the 19th century, the Barbier family owned some 1,500 hectares of vines in an estate called Le Martinet in three appellations (Plan de Dieu, Rasteau and Gigondas) in the Vaucluse region of France. In 1880, phylloxera ravaged the vineyards in France so Leon Barbier was forced to source the much needed grapes from Spain. In 1979, René Barbier, his wife Isabelle Meyer and their children René IV, Céline and later on Christian and Andersen, acquired a few hectares of Grenache near to Gratallops in the DO Priorat ; this was the birth of Clos Mogador.
Fruit is sourced from the original estate vineyard on the characteristic local llicorella soil, composed of partially decomposed slate and quartz. It majors on Grenache with smaller amounts of Carignan, Syrah and Cabernet Sauvignon. Red wines are fermented with natural yeasts in open barrels and wooden vats and aged in a mix of old and new oak. The estate vineyards have been certified organic since 2012.
Com Tu is made only with Grenache from La Figuera, a small village of 70 inhabitants in Montsant. The idea of the name “Com Tu” was one of Anderson Barbier Meyer (the son of René Barbier), an artist that together with his mother, came up with this label. Whole and destemmed grapes are going through different fermentations with different methods, combining macerations in different times; a shorter one (between 10 and 12 days), and another a bit longer (from 35 to 45 days). At the end of the fermentation, the ageing period begins. This will happen in 5.000 litres foudres, made of old wood, where the wine will stay for one year. After that it will go onto cement recipients for 4 to 6 months.
Grape variety: 100% Grenache
