CLOS MOGADOR 1995
Clos Mogador is located in the Priorat appellation of Catalonia in Spain. In the 19th century, the Barbier family owned some 1,500 hectares of vines in an estate called Le Martinet in three appellations (Plan de Dieu, Rasteau and Gigondas) in the Vaucluse region of France. In 1880, phylloxera ravaged the vineyards in France so Leon Barbier was forced to source the much needed grapes from Spain. In 1979, René Barbier, his wife Isabelle Meyer and their children René IV, Céline and later on Christian and Andersen, acquired a few hectares of Grenache near to Gratallops in the DO Priorat ; this was the birth of Clos Mogador.
Fruit is sourced from the original estate vineyard on the characteristic local llicorella soil, composed of partially decomposed slate and quartz. It majors on Grenache with smaller amounts of Carignan, Syrah and Cabernet Sauvignon.
Red wines are fermented with natural yeasts in open barrels and wooden vats and aged in a mix of old and new oak. The estate vineyards have been certified organic since 2012.
