Domaine Jo Landron - Le Fief du Breil 2016
Domaines Landron is located in La Haye Fouassière, in the Muscadet Sèvre et Maine appellation in the Loire Valley. In 1945, Pierre and Julien Landron, father and uncle respectively of Joseph (Jo) Landron, bought land in need of clearing. They planted vines to create the three-hectare family holding. From 1950 to 1975, they converted the land left uncultivated during the wars into vineyards. After having developed the estate together for many years, Pierre and Julien Landron went their separate ways in 1967. From 1979, Jo Landron went into business with his father and bought new plots of land. In the early 1980s, they began selling directly to customers and exporting their wines abroad. When their vines got poisoned by weed killer, they decided to abandon the use of herbicides and started the conversion of their 50-hectares vineyard to organic winegrowing and the domaine was certified in 2002. To take it even further, the estate eventually joined the biodynamic winegrowing movement already followed by other estates in France and abroad. The certification followed in 2011. A new awareness of the diversity of subsoils at Domaines Landron then led to a new terroir-specific focus. From here on, the must from different plots was fermented separately and the estate began actively pursuing different styles of wines. The Muscadets, as a result, showed to have different ageing abilities, individual complexity and unique mineral identities according to the aspect, geological characteristics and yield profile of each plot.
Le Fief du Breil is made from Melon de Bourgogne, the age of which varies between 30 and 42 years. The vine is cultivated on a soil composed of orthogneiss and quartz resulting from the metamorphism of granite. After the manual harvest, the whole bunches are put in direct pneumatic pressing and alcoholic fermentation occurs spontaneously with indigenous yeasts. The wine is aged in glass concrete vats, on lees, for 32 months.
Grape variety: 100% Melon de Bourgogne
