Marjan Simcic - Ribolla 2019
The Simčič Estate is located in the prestigious sub-region of Goriška Brda in the Primorska region of Slovenia. The vineyards are planted on extremely rolling hills on soils of alluvial origin covered with marl and sandstone locally called Okopa. The estate was created in 1860 by Anton Simčič but it was the arrival of Marjan Simčič in 1997 that sparked new growth. Today the Smičic family owns 18 hectares of vines, some of which are over fifty years old, and the estate also operates vines in Italy in the Collio which is the natural extension of the Brda region. The vineyards are located about twenty kilometers from the sea and benefit from the oceanic influences of the Adriatic. The vineyard of the estate is organic and the vinification is traditional and minimal intervention.
Ribolla is a Slovene autochthonous variety which grows best on Brda marl soil (opoka) under the influence of the mild Mediterranean climate and cold wind from the Julian Alps. The Ribolla, from 15 to 28 years-old, is hand-harvested and macerated for up to 48 hours. The fermentation is spontaneous with the indigenous yeasts in stainless steel vats. The wine is aged on the lees for 4 months and is aged for another month in bottle.
Grape variety: 100% Ribolla
