The Journeyman Distillery is located in Three Oaks, near Chicago, Michigan, in the United States. In 2000, Bill Weltergraduated after four years from Division 1 Golf at Missouri State University. After receiving a British work visa, he moved to Saint Andrews, in Scotland, to work and gain a better understanding of golf and its origins. Working at the Old Course Hotel, Bill met Greg Ramsay, originally from Tasmania, and the two would develop a passion for Scottish whisky and a life long friendship. Bill returned to the United States in 2001 to work for his father in the family business, and Greg also left Scotland the same year. After developing the award-winning Barnbougle Dunes golf course, Greg turned to the idea of turning a former grain mill into a distillery in his hometown of Bothwell, Tasmania. In 2006, Bill went to Tasmania to see Barnbougle but also the site of Greg's distillery. Welter will continue his apprenticeship in the summer of 2010, working with Master Distiller Robert Birnecker to distill the very first rye whiskey in Chicago's Ravenswood neighbourhood. Bill and Chuck Welter teamed up to purchase the central part of the Featherbone factory, which would become the Journeyman Distillery. Journeyman Distillery is one of the few Certified Organic Distilleries in the United States, supplying all organic spirits produced without the use of synthetic fertilizers, artificial pesticides, herbicides, antibiotics, growth hormones or genetically modified organisms.
Featherbone is a Bourbon Whiskey, made from a single-distillation from organic corn (70%), organic wheat (25%) and organic rye (5%).
