CLOS MOGADOR - Espectacle del Montsant 2018
Clos Mogador is located in the Priorat appellation of Catalonia in Spain. In the 19th century, the Barbier family owned some 1,500 hectares of vines in an estate called Le Martinet in three appellations (Plan de Dieu, Rasteau and Gigondas) in the Vaucluse region of France. In 1880, phylloxera ravaged the vineyards in France so Leon Barbier was forced to source the much needed grapes from Spain. In 1979, René Barbier, his wife Isabelle Meyer and their children René IV, Céline and later on Christian and Andersen, acquired a few hectares of Grenache near to Gratallops in the DO Priorat ; this was the birth of Clos Mogador. The estate vineyards have been certified organic since 2012.
The Espectacle cuvée is produced by René and Isabelle Barbier from Clos Mogador, Fernando and Marta Zamora (oenologists and teachers at the University of Tarragona) and Charlotte and Christopher Cannan from Clos Figueras. The wine comes from a single plot of Grenache, over 120 years old. Aging takes place in French oak barrels for 15 months.
Grape variety: 100% Grenache
