Schloss Johannisberg - Grünlack Riesling Spätlese 2015
Schloss Johannisberg is located in the village of Johannisberg in the Rheingau wine-growing region of Germany. It has been making wine for over 900 years and the winery is claimed to have "discovered" late harvest wine. Only Riesling has been grown at Schloss Johannisberg since 1720. Today, the winery is managed by Stefan Doctor and Marcel Szopa, the cellar is taken care of by Gerd Ritter and Michel Städter is head of viniculture. The approximately 300-hectare castle forest extends north of Johannisberg. The wood of the native oaks is used as the starting material for the production of the wine barrels that they use to make wine. The estate has set up a hierarchy for its wines which is distinguished by its different colours on the neck of the bottle. Thus, the so-called classic wines of the term "Gelblack" are found under the colour yellow, "Rotland" for Kabinett in red capsule, "Grünlack" for Spätlese in geen capsule, "Silberblack" for dry wines in silver capsule etc.
The Grünlack Riesling Spätlese is Schloss Johannisberg's great classic, in their portfolio since 1775. The 2015 vintage was fantastic, possibly even legendary with great options for both drinking now and laying down.
Grape variety: 100% Riesling
