Tenuta delle Terre Nere - Moganazzi 2018
Tenuta delle Terre Nere is located in Randazzo, Sicily. The estate is cultivating vineyards on the slopes of Mount Etnasince 2002. It has grown to encompass almost 55 hectares, divided into 24 parcels in six crus, with a total vineyard surface of 27 hectares in production and 7 hectares in breeding. All of Terre Nere's vineyards are farmed organically, with a certification since 2010, and have been since the winery was established. Terre Nere's vineyards range from 600 to 1000 metres above sea level, and are planted on steep slopes. The steepest gradients are closely terraced and need to be worked entirely manually. Many vines are approaching 100 years old and one parcel is more than 130, and was planted before the phylloxera epidemic of the late 19th century. Tenuta delle Terre Nere owns vineyards in six crus: Calderara Sottana, San Lorenzo, Bocca d’Orzo, Santo Spirito, Guardiola, and Feudo di Mezzo.
Moganazzi is a Premier Cru made from Nerello Mascalese. The first parcel was acquired by Marco de Grazia in 2007 and was so small that he only produced two barrels of wine from it. He dedicated them to a charity project for a children’s hospital, with labels appropriately drawn by his three-year-old daughter. A few years later, he was able to buy an adjacent parcel and rent another that he is negotiating to buy as well. Therefore, in 2017, he started bottling Moganazzi under his Terre Nere label. The age of the vines varies between 70 and 90 years-old. Ageing is made in large French oak barriques for 16 to 18 months, then 1 month in steel before bottling.
