BIONDI SANTI - Rosso di Montalcino 1988
Biondi Santi is located in Tuscany, Italy. The family estate was created in the 1930s and is said to have been the first to produce Brunello di Montalcino. Ferrucio Biondi Santi, during the oidium and phylloxera problems at the end of the 19th century, developed “massale selections” (visual selection of the most robust vineplants), then grafted them on American rootstocks and continued to produce red wine aged in oak barrels from Sangiovese while other producers have stopped their production or have turned to different styles of wine. Nowadays, the estate is managed by Jacopo Biondi Santi and his sister Alessandra. The Biondi Santi vineyard covers 25 hectares of Sangiovese, of which 5 hectares were planted between 1930 and 1972. They have also owned, since the 1990s, Castello di Montepo, an estate in Scansano in the Tuscan Maremma.
The Rosso di Montalcino is made with Sangiovese Grosso, whose 5-to-10-year old vines are cultivated on rich stones from various origins. It is aged for 1 year in Slavonian oak casks, with a further 4-months ageing in bottle.
Grape variety: 100% Sangiovese Grosso
