ALMAVIVA - Epu 2019
Viña Almaviva is located in Puente Alto, in the Maipo Valley, in Central Chile. In 1997, Baroness Philippine de Rothschild (Chairman of the Advisory Board of Baron Philippe de Rothschild SA) and Eduardo Guilisasti Tagle (Chairman of Viña Concha y Toro S.A.) sealed a partnership agreement with a view to create an exceptional Franco-Chilean wine called Almaviva. Almaviva was the first wine in Chile created under the French Château concept, taking into account exceptional terroir, one unique bodega and one technical team. The vineyards spread over 60 hectares and benefit a cold weather influence of the Andes cordillera, which manifests itself in the form of fresh breezes and an ample temperature oscillation between day and night. These conditions encourage a long and homoegenous development of the grapes, jointly with a more pronounced acidity, a fresh red fruit and a higher concentration of colours and aromas in the grape bunches. The winery is planted with five distinct varieties, the Cabernet Sauvignon, the Carménère, the Cabernet Franc, the Merlot, and the Petit Verdot, with Cabernet Sauvignon being by far the most cultivated, as it is particularly well adapted to the terroir of Puente Alto.
EPU, the name of Almaviva’s second wine means “Two” in the language of the Mapuche, one of the main indigenous cultures of southern Chile. The symbol is a reference to the Tupu, an ornament which expresses fundamental aspects of the worldview of various ancient Andean civilisations. It is a Bordeaux-style blend in which Cabernet Sauvignonpredominates.
