The Magnum Photos agency was created in 1947 by four pioneering photographers: Henri Cartier-Bresson, Robert Capa, George Rodger and David Seymour. Magnum represents some of the most renowned photographers in the world, retaining its founding ideals and its idiosyncratic blend of journalist, artist and storyteller. Magnum has documented most of the world's major events and personalities since the 1930s; covering industry, society and people, places of interest, politics and current events, disasters and conflicts.
Magnum Series #1 focuses on Elliott Erwitt . Born in Paris in 1928 to Russian parents, Erwitt spent his childhood in Milan, then emigrated to the United States, via France, with his family in 1939. As a teenager living in Hollywood, he was interested in photography and worked in a bedroom commercial black before experimenting with photography at Los Angeles City College. Elliott Erwitt traveled to France and Italy in 1949 with his trusty Rolleiflex camera. In 1951 he was drafted for military service and undertook various photographic assignments during his service. In 1953, he joined Magnum Photos and worked as a freelance photographer.
