Schloss Johannisberg - Grünlack Riesling Spätlese 2008
Schloss Johannisberg is located in the village of Johannisberg in the Rheingau wine region of Germany . The estate has been producing wine for over 900 years and is said to have "discovered" late harvest wine. Only Riesling has been grown at Schloss Johannisberg since 1720. Today the winery is run by Stefan Doctor and Marcel Szopa , the winery is managed by Gerd Ritter and Michel Städter is head of viticulture. The castle forest of about 300 hectares extends north of Johannisberg. The wood of the native oaks is used as raw material for the production of the wine barrels that they use for the elaboration. The estate has prioritized its wines which are distinguished by their different colors on the neck of the bottle. Thus, the so-called classic wines of the term "Gelblack" are found under the color yellow, "Rotland" for Kabinett in red capsule, "Grünlack" for Spätlese in geen capsule, "Silberblack" for dry wines in silver capsule, etc.
The Grünlack Riesling Spätlese is the great classic of Schloss Johannisberg, in their portfolio since 1775. The 2008 vintage is of excellent quality. The winter was cold and wet, and the wet conditions continued well into the spring. Conditions then improved, flowering took place early and the vines generally withstood the small hailstorms that sometimes struck. However, the good weather was not to last, with September bringing rain and cooler days. A hot, dry October finally came to the rescue, pushing the remaining grapes to phenolic maturity. The resulting wines are generally bright, the growing season cool making a year for Spätlese that display attractive fresh fruit and zesty acidity.
