Chateau Cardinal 1983
Château Cardinal is located in the Montagne-Saint-Émilion appellation, on the right bank of Bordeaux. It belongs to Vignobles Bertin . The Bertin family produces wines in 3 appellations, over a total area of 42 hectares: Château Dallau (Bordeaux Supérieur), Château Cardinal (Montagne Saint-Émilion) and Clos l'Hermitage (Lalande de Pomerol). Sarah Vital , the granddaughter of Yvette Bertin, completed her winemaking internships at Château Quinault l'Enclos (Saint-Émilion Grand Cru) in 2001 and her end-of-study internships within the Duclot Group directed by Jean- Francois Moueix. She worked as a wine broker for 6 years then as a Grands Crus buyer for Maison Ginestet for 8 years to finally return to her family business full-time since July 2020.
Château Cardinal is a blend of Merlot, Cabernet Franc and Cabernet Sauvignon . The 1983 vintage for Bordeaux was generally very good. The growing season began with a cold winter and a cool, wet spring. However, mild conditions set in shortly after allowing near-perfect bud break and flowering and, despite a brief cool spell, temperatures soared in July, the month even proving to be a record high, and the drought was a problem. Fortunately, however, these dry conditions did not last because the month of August, although still hot, brought abundant rains which relieved the vines. The hot and humid conditions, however, created a certain level of humidity which increased the risk of rot and certain diseases and some growers had to use sprays to protect the vines. Fortunately, September brought drier and sunnier conditions and a succession of good days before harvest ensured that the resulting crop was healthy. The harvest began towards the end of September and continued until October with a generous but good quality harvest. The wines obtained were, on the whole, very good, in particular from the right bank, which is predominantly Merlot.
Grapes: Merlot, Cabernet Franc, Cabernet Sauvignon
