Château MARGAUX 2002
Château Margaux is located in the Margaux appellation, in the Bordeaux wine region. It was classified Premier Grand Cru Classé in the 1855 classification. In 1800, the estate occupied 265 hectares with a third planted with vines, which remains the situation today. The Château Margaux vineyards have a complex combination of soils that are unique to the region. These consist of chalky clay under a top layer of coarse and fine gravel. In 1977, Château Margaux was bought by André Mentzepoulos , a grain trader and owner of a grocery chain of Greek origin. In times of economic crisis, he began a major investment program, continued at his death in 1980 by his daughter Corinne Mentzepoulos , now supported by her daughter Alexandra and her son Alexis.
The 2002 vintage had a mild winter that turned into a cool spring, but heavy rains made flowering uneven. The summer did not warm up and the rains continued during the month of August. An intense heat wave finally swept through the end of summer and continued through September and October. These milder conditions took the small crop from potentially mediocre to a surprisingly high quality crop, although careful selection was still needed.
