Azores Wine Company - Verdelho O Original - White 2021
The Azores Wine Company is located on Pico Island in the Azores . It was founded in 2014 by partners António Maçanita, Filipe Rocha and Paulo Machado . A large part of the Azores Wine Company's project involves reclaiming around 100 hectares of vineyards on the island of Pico, which will soon become the largest private producer in the Azores. In addition to its own vineyards, the company maintains links with around twenty local winegrowers. They are reviving local varieties such as Arinto dos Açores, Terrantez do Pico, Verdelho and Saborinho. On the island of Pico, the vines grow in extreme conditions, very close to the sea and planted in the crevices of the bedrock, in volcanic soil. The viticulture of the Azores Wine Company prides itself on using a non-interventionist viticulture that respects the nature of the indigenous grape varieties of the Azores and its terroir. Vinification follows the same principle of minimal intervention .
Verdelho O Original is made from the Verdelho grape, which is indigenous to the Azores and distinct from the Verdelhos grown on the mainland. After the manual harvest, the pressing is carried out in whole bunches. Fermentation takes place in stainless steel vats of 600 to 1,000 litres. The aging lasts 10 months on fine lees , and 48 months of prolonged aging in the bottle.
Grape variety: 100% Verdelho
