The Giacomo Conterno Estate is located in Monteorte d'Alba, in Piedmont , Italy . In 1961, Aldo Conterno and his brother Giovanni inherited the Giacomo Conterno winery; the two brothers separated in 1969 and Aldo created his own estate, Poderi Aldo Conterno, in Bussia in Monforte d'Alba. Giovanni Conterno, who died in 2004, became the guarantor of the family heritage and in 1974 acquired the Cascina Francia vineyard. He built the worldwide reputation of the estate, unanimously considered one of the greatest winegrowers in Italy. His son Roberto Conterno, born in 1968, joined him in 1988, and now presides over the destiny of the estate, which he recently enlarged. Roberto Conterno embodies the traditional and timeless style of Barolo.
The 2009 vintage in Piedmont saw heavy winter snow and spring rains which helped rejuvenate the soils depleted water table in anticipation of a hot, dry summer as little rain fell between May and September . For many, the growing season was a huge success, but for others, the Nebbiolo struggled to mature. However, there were unquestionably excellent results with Dolcetto and Barbera.
