Biondi Santi - Brunello Di Montalcino 2017
Biondi Santi is located in Tuscany , in Italy . The family estate was established in the 1930s and is said to have been the first to produce Brunello di Montalcino . Ferrucio Biondi Santi, during the powdery mildew and phylloxera problems at the end of the 19th century, developed mass selections from his hardiest vines, then grafted them onto American rootstocks and continued to produce an oak-aged red wine from Sangiovese while other producers stopped production or turned towards different styles of wine. Today the estate is managed by Jacopo Biondi Santi and his sister Alessandra. The Biondi Santi vineyard has 25 hectares of Sangiovese , of which 5 hectares were planted between 1930 and 1972. They also have, since the 1990s, Castello di Montepo , an estate in Scansano in Maremma Tuscany .
Brunello di Montalcino is made from Sangiovese Grosso (clone BBS11) , whose vines aged 10 to 25 years are cultivated on rich stones of various origins. The wine is aged for 3 years in Slavonian oak barrels , with an additional 4 months of aging in the bottle .
