Penfolds - Bin 144 - Yattarna Chardonnay 2018
Penfolds is an Australian wine producer, with vineyards primarily in South Australia, Barossa Valley, Adelaide Hills and Coonawarra. In 1844, following the success of the first Sherries and fortified wines, founders Dr Christopher and Mary Penfold planted their vine cuttings which they had carried on their trip to Australia. The fledgling vineyard was officially established as Penfolds Wine Company at Magill Estate. By the time Mary Penfold retired in 1884 (handing over management to her daughter, Georgina), Penfolds was producing a third of South Australia's wine volumes. By 1907 Penfolds had become the largest winery in South Australia. In 1948, history was made again when Max Schubert became the company's first head winemaker. A loyal businessman and true innovator, Schubert would propel Penfolds onto the world stage with his experiment in aging wines: the creation of Penfolds Grange in the 1950s. In 1959, while Schubert was perfecting his Grange experiment in secret, the tradition of Bin Wines has started.
Yattarna Bin 144 is made from Chardonnay whose grapes come from Adelaide Hills, Tumbarumba and Tasmania. The wine is aged for 8 months in French oak barrels, 60% of which are new.
