Château MAUCAILLOU 1986
Château Maucaillou is located in Moulis-en-Médoc , in the Bordeaux region. The Petit-Laroche family , wine merchants in the 19th century, had the cellars and warehouses of Moulis built in 1871, in the geographical center of Haut-Médoc. In 1875, J. Petit-Laroche married and offered his wife as a wedding gift the construction of a beautiful bourgeois residence opposite his Médoc cellars: the current Château. At the same time, J. Petit-Laroche established a new wine estate at places called “Maucaillou” and “Caubet”, on one and a half hectares, which would take the name Château Maucaillou. “Maucaillou” means “bad stones”, in the sense that the farmers of the Middle Ages understood it, because this type of plot of gravelly land was unsuitable for any cereal cultivation, the main source of survival at the time. Subsequently, we realized that these gravel ridges constituted a preferred terroir for high-expression vineyards. The Château today belongs to the Dourthe family .
Château Maucaillou is a blend of Cabernet Sauvignon, Merlot and Petit Verdot . The wine is aged in barrels . The 1986 vintage for Bordeaux was relatively difficult but excellent wines were still produced. The growing season began with a particularly cold winter. Spring began with cool, wet conditions until milder weather ensured both budbreak and flowering, although they were slightly delayed. The good weather sets in for a long time and the summer is long, hot and extremely dry. September brought much needed rain to revitalize the soils and vines. Conditions dried out towards the end of the month, giving way to hot, dry weather which brought welcome winds conducive to tending the vines.
