Ferdinando Principiano - Barolo Serralunga 2020
Ferdinando Principiano is located in Monteforte d'Alba, Piedmont , Italy . He is part of the new generation of promising winemakers cultivating the Langhe hills in Piedmont. A graduate of the Scuola Viticole Umberto I in Alba in 1993, he joined his father Americo at the Monforte D'Alba estate after an apprenticeship with Giacomo Conterno and Roberto Voerzio. The former motivated his determination to produce a pure and balanced style of Barolo, persuading him that nourishing the vineyard soil and rejecting the use of artificial fertilizers and pesticides provides the right conditions for the vine to flourish. Voerzio taught him that the traditional style with excessive use of wood does not necessarily give the best results. Today, fermentations are shorter and the ripening period is extended. The vineyards are certified organic . Ferdinando Principiano keeps sulfur to a minimum and has replaced the use of copper in the vineyard with seaweed and aloe treatments to improve the long-term health of the vines in their environment. The wines are treated with the least amount of possible intervention.
Barolo Serralunga is Ferdinando's entry-level Barolo and comes from a 4-hectare plot of young Nebbiolo vines planted in the Boscareto Valley in Serralunga d'Alba. Fermentation is carried out without the addition of sulfur. The wine is aged in large oak barrels for 2 years before being marketed.
Grape variety: 100% Nebbiolo
