Brugal is a rum brand originating from the Dominican Republic . It was founded in 1888 by Don Andrés Brugal Montaner , a Spaniard who gained expertise in rum making during his stay in Cuba before settling in Puerto Plata. Since its inception, Brugal has remained a family business. In 2008, the Scottish group The Edrington Group acquired a majority stake in Brugal & Co., while maintaining production in the Dominican Republic and retaining an active role for the Brugal family in the management of the company.
Brugal 1888 is the first Dominican rum to be double aged in American and Spanish oak barrels.
