There Glenrothes Distillery is located on the banks of the River Spey, in the heart of Scotland's whisky region. Speyside . It was originally built in 1878 by James Stuart , a former Macallan employee who almost immediately sold the distillery to William Grant of Glenfiddich. Since then, Glenrothes has had an accident-prone history, with three major fires and a massive explosion slowing production over the years. Today, it is a major distillery, producing over 5.5 million liters of spirit annually from its 10 stills. The grenade-shaped bottles are also a distinctive feature of Glenrothes whisky. The current distillery is owned by the Edrington Group, which also owns The Macallan and Highland Park.
The Glenrothes 15 Year Old is aged primarily in first-fill, sherry-impregnated European oak casks.
