The Château de Fargues estate has belonged to the Lur-Saluces family (former owner of Yquem) since 1472, which is to say an eternity. It was with its red wine that Fargues first became known, a production abandoned in 1930 in favor of the famous sweet wine. Thus, the cru could not be taken into consideration by the famous classification of Sauternes in 1855, but what does it matter because, more than the official title, it is the sublime nectar produced by the domain which is authoritative, undeniably placing Fargues among the elite of the appellation's wines.
Today, Count Alexandre de Lur-Saluces manages the cru with a masterful hand, applying the same Draconian principles of viticulture and vinification as in Yquem: low yields (8 hl / ha), ruthless sorting of the harvest to keep only the best of the noble rot, aging for 42 months in one-year barrels, no filtration, etc. The only downside to this pretty picture: the production is extremely low, leaving many amateurs to their frustration. Powerful yet incredibly elegant, the wine is so rich and smooth that it is almost syrupy. It offers complex and tasty aromas of citrus, exotic fruits and broom, but also toast and sweet spices. A great sweet wine cut for aging.
