KNOCKANDO - 1977 - Maturated in Oak Butts - Bottled 1998 - 43%
Knockando is a distillery in the Speyside region of Scotland. Its name means in Gaelic "Little black hill". The distillery was founded by John Tytler Thompson in 1898, during the whisky boom that took place in the 19th century, with the building designed by architect Charles Doig. Unlike many distilleries, which were forced to close at various times in the 1900s, Knockando had only brief times of closure, notably from 1899 to 1904, but the distillery was back in operation as soon as producers of Gin W&A Gilby took possession of it. Knockando has changed hands several times and is now owned by Diageo.
Production is small, with 1.3 million litres distilled from four copper stills. The distillery also has five warehouses where the whiskies are kept in oak casks and sherry barrels. Knockando's Single Malt is not consumed much in the UK and USA, but is one of Diageo's flagship products in France and Spain.
The Knockando Master Reserve was distilled in 1977 and then aged for 21 years in oak butts.
