GUT OGGAU - Timotheus 2020
Gut Oggau is located in Oggau am Neusiedler See in Burgenland, Austria. It was established by Eduard and Stephanie Tscheppe in 2007. Before starting the winery, Eduard made conventional wine with his father in Styria, and Stephanie’s family owned and operated a Michelin starred restaurant. They restored the 17th century winery that had been abandoned for 20 years, including its 200-year-old screw press. The vines’ 20-year period of neglect was fortunate, as this allowed for all pesticide and chemical treatments to be washed away. This let them begin working immediately on vines biodynamically, where they are now fully Demeter certified. When they began to work with the wines in the cellar, they noticed that each wine seemed so alive with its own personality, that they decided to craft labels centered around the personality inside each bottle. Thus, they created a family of wines: each wine is given a name of one family member and the artist Jung von Matt draws a face for each label. Most of the vineyards are field blended, and therefore there is little mention of grape varieties here, but they do work with 6 main grape varieties– Blaufrankish, Zweigelt Grüner Veltliner, Welchriesling, Weissburgunder and Gewurtzraminer.
Timotheus is the son of Mechthild and Bertholdi, and the brother of Joschuari and Emmeram. He impresses with his strong, powerful and balanced character. He has his feet on the ground, but is always open for new experiences and seeks challenges. He is known to be sure of himself, a deep being, sometimes clever; he makes friends easily thanks to his winning nature. This wine is a blend of Grüner Vetliner and Weissburgunder (Pinot Blanc). The grapes are grown on soils of limestone, slate, gravel and sand. They are harvested by hand and partially destemmed; one third of the grapes macerate on the skins for about 3 weeks, while the rest is directly pressed, after which the wine is then reassembled. Fermentation takes place in used barrels of 500 litres. The wine stays in these barrels for about 12 months without stirring. The wine is bottled unfined, unfiltered and without the addition of sulfur.
Grape varieties: 50% Grüner Vetliner, 50% Weissburgunder
