STELLA DI CAMPALTO - Brunello di Montalcino 2016
Stella di Campalto is located in Montalcino, Tuscany, Italy . La Tenuta was founded by the Di Campalto family in 1992, after acquiring the San Giuseppe winery which had fallen into disuse 50 years earlier. Today, Stella di Campalto comprises nine vineyards planted on approximately 7 hectares of land, with the rest of the estate occupied by olive groves and woods. The estate obtained organic certification in 1996 and from 2002 implemented biodynamic farming practices in its vineyards. It has 12 different soil types that radiate around the winery, which is why the single grape variety, Sangiovese, expresses itself in so many different ways.
Brunello di Montalcino is made from Sangiovese from 5.40 hectares of vines. Fermentation takes place spontaneously with native yeasts in 35 hectoliter wooden vats. It is aged for 44 months in oak barrels , with an additional 18 months in bottle .
The 2016 vintage for Tuscany is widely considered excellent . The winter was cool and wet and conditions continued well into spring. Although flowering was generally successful, wet weather caused some to fail, reducing yields slightly. Summer finally arrived with July bringing hot, dry weather that was interrupted once by rain in August, which at that time was welcome. September saw some rain and the warm days and cool nights proved ideal for Sangiovese.
Varietal: 100% Sangiovese
