Markus Molitor - Zeltinger Sonnenuhr - Riesling - Spatlese (Sweet) 2014
Weingut Markus Molitor is located in Rheinland-Pfalz, in the Mosel region of Germany . The winery was acquired by Markus Molitor in 1984, who undertook extensive renovations between 2009 and 2012. The estate and its eponymous owner gained worldwide attention in 2015 and earned the nickname "Herr 300 Punkte" ( Monsieur 300 points) when three Auslese Rieslings from his 2013 vintage received a score of 100 points from Robert Parker's Wine Advocate. The estate cultivates vines on 15 different sites in Moselle and Saarland, the vast majority of which are planted with Riesling. Markus Molitor uses color-coded capsules according to the style of the wine: white capsules denote dry wines, semi-dry wines have a grey-green capsule while naturally sweet and botrytized wines have a golden capsule.
The grapes are slowly fermented using indigenous yeasts in large barrels at low temperatures, often slowing to a pause in winter and then ending in spring. The wines are then aged either in wooden vats or in stainless steel vats. The term Zeltingen Sonnenuhr describes a German vineyard in Zeltingen, a district of the municipality of Zeltingen-Rachtig on the Moselle. The wines (mainly Riesling) are grown on this unique 21.5 hectare site. The unique layer of Zeltinger Sonnenuhr is part of the greater Münzlay region.
Spätlese means "Vendange Late" and is made from grapes that have a must weight of 76-90 Oechsle (the hydrometric scale measuring the density of grape must) which equates to 172-209 g/L of residual sugar .
