Bodegas Raul Perez - Ultreia Mencia 2020
Raúl Perez is a highly influential Spanish winemaker, farming under his own label and acting as a consultant to other wineries. In the 1990s, Raúl Perez studied at the Faculty of Oenology. Since 1996 it has been most closely associated with the Bierzo region and the Mencia grape variety, but has projects in other regions of Spain. More than 20 different wines are made under its own name, but mainly in small quantities. Collaborations include the Encinas Bierzo Mencia made with the Graillot family from Crozes-Hermitage. In addition, his family has owned Castro Ventosa in Bierzo since its founding in 1752. He has been involved in winemaking there since his adolescence. With his wife, under the name Raúl Perez & Noelia de Paz, he makes La Tentacion, a rare Spanish Pinot Noir from a small plot of Bierzo. Wines under the Ultreia banner form the core of his personal portfolio. Ultreia means “Forward!” in medieval Latin; the brand pays homage to pilgrims on their way to Santiago de Compostela. Raúl Pérez takes nature very seriously. Its priority is to exert minimal influence on the grapes.
This vintage is made from Mencia . The grapes come from Valtuille and are selected from the highest rows of the plot. These bunches are fermented in open vertical vats. The wine is aged for 12 months in neutral barrels .
Grape variety: 100% Mencia
