Klein Constantia - Anwilka Vineyards - Ugaba 2019
Klein Constantia is located in Constantia , above Cape Town in South Africa . The winery is known for its sweet wine, Vin de Constance, but also produces a range of dry wines from grape varieties such as Sauvignon Blanc, Chardonnay and Cabernet Sauvignon. The vineyard is subject to the cooling influences of nearby False Bay and is based on decomposed granite and limestone soils.
Anwilka Vineyards is located in Stellenbosch . The property was purchased at the end of the 1990s and a vast replanting of 40 hectares of vines was undertaken. The owners at the time, Lowell Jooste (former co-owner of Klein Constantia) as well as internationally renowned Bordeaux wine personalities Hubert de Boüard (co-owner of Château Angélus in Saint-Emilion) and Bruno Prats (former owner of Château Cos d' Estournel in Saint-Estèphe) marketed their first blend in 2005. The suitability of the grape varieties to specific sites was carefully studied. The soils have a moderate potential, allowing low vigor of the vines and still healthy vines, a gentle slope facilitating drainage during winter rains. Minimal irrigation is used and good water retention capacity prevents excessive water stress.
Ugaba is the second wine from Anwilka Vineyards. Ugaba 2019 is a blend of Syrah (46%), Cabernet Sauvignon (42%), Petit Verdot (8%) and Malbec (4%) . After manual harvesting, the grapes are sorted before and after destemming. Alcoholic fermentation takes place in stainless steel vats , long pumping overs and prolonged maceration ensure gentle extraction. The wine is aged for 14 months in French oak barrels, 20% of which are new.
