Gianni Brunelli - Brunello di Montalcino 2017
Domaine Gianni Brunelli is located in the town of Montalcino , in southern Tuscany . It was founded in 1987 when Gianni Brunelli purchased Le Chiuse di Sotto, a small vineyard that had once belonged to his father. In memory of his father, a small plot of vines planted by him in 1947 is still preserved. The property consists of a single block of 5 hectares, of which 2 hectares are cultivated in Sangiovese while the rest is cultivated with olive groves, in organic farming since the beginning. In the mid-1990s, Gianni and his wife Laura bought Podernovone. Located on the south-eastern slope of Montalcino, it consists of a 4.5 hectare property planted with Sangiovese (for the production of Brunello) and Merlot (for the production of Amor Costante). The artwork on the wine label is called "Elvira with a Hat," created by Harvard economist and painter Richard M. Goodwin, who was a frequent guest at Osteria Le Logge and a dear friend at Brunelli couple.
The Brunello di Montalcino 2017 is made from Sangiovese from 2 vineyards: that of Podernovone located at an altitude of 500 meters and planted in 1998, and that of Canalicchio located at an altitude of 250 meters and planted in 1989. The grapes are harvested by hand and vinification starts at 28°C for 5 to 6 days, maceration lasts 12 to 16 days at 32°C. The wine is aged for 30 months in 25 and 30 hectoliter Slavonic oak barrels .
