Mullineux et Lleu - Kloof Street - Red 2022
Mullineux & Leeu Family Wines is a family-run winery located near the village of Riebeek Kasteel in the Swartland region of South Africa . Founders and winemakers Chris and Andrea Mullineux have taken a natural approach to winemaking since the winery was founded in 2007 and work with winemakers who approach farming with sustainable and natural methods. The name of the estate company was changed from Mullineux Family Wines in 2013 with further investment from Analjit Singh, adding 'Leeu', which means "Lion" in Afrikaans. Mullineux wines are vinified with a minimalist approach. Apart from a small amount of sulphur, nothing is added or removed from their wines. The grapes are fermented with indigenous yeasts and macerated for about four to six weeks before being pressed directly into barrels. All Mullineux wines undergo malolactic fermentation and are aged in French oak barrels. When ready, they are bottled unfined and unfiltered.
Kloof Street Rouge 2022 is a blend of Syrah (57%), Grenache (27%), Cinsault (9%) and Tinta Barocca (7%) . It comes from sustainably farmed vineyards in different parts of the Swartland, aged 7 to 48 years. The grapes are refrigerated in a cold room after destemming in the vat and about 60% of whole bunches added. The must is first punched down once a day. Fermentation begins with indigenous yeasts and the wine is punched down twice a day. The total maceration lasts less than 4 weeks. The wine is then drained and pressed in barrels for malolactic fermentation. The different plots are racked in the spring to blend the wine, which is then returned to barrels for 11 months in 225-litre French oak barrels of 3rd and 4th filling, and 500-litre demi-muids.
