Clos Mogador 2021
Clos Mogador is located in the Priorat appellation of Catalonia , Spain . In the 19th century, the Barbier family owned some 1,500 hectares of vines in an estate called Le Martinet across three appellations (Plan de Dieu, Rasteau, and Gigondas) in Vaucluse, France. In 1880, phylloxera ravaged the vineyards of France, so Léon Barbier was forced to source grapes from Spain. In 1979, René Barbier , his wife Isabelle Meyer, and their children René IV, Céline, and later Christian and Andersen, acquired a few hectares of Grenache near Gratallops in the Priorat DO; this was the birth of Clos Mogador.
The fruit comes from the estate's original vineyard on the characteristic local llicorella soil, composed of partially decomposed slate and quartz. It is predominantly Grenache with smaller amounts of Carignan, Syrah and Cabernet Sauvignon . The red wines are fermented with natural yeasts in open barrels and wooden vats and aged in a mixture of old and new barrels. The estate's vineyards have been certified organic since 2012.
