Although unclassified vintage, like all Pomerol wines, Petrus is the most famous but also the most prestigious of all wines. The legend begins at the end of the 19th century. The Arnaud family owns the estate, and Petrus already has a reputation that will never falter afterwards. Edmonde Loubat gradually bought the family shares of the Petrus Castle Civil Society from 1925 onwards. She became the sole owner in 1945. Dynamic and aware of the exceptional potential of this "small" vineyard (about 6ha - 11.5ha currently after the acquisition of a plot at Château Gazin), she found in 1947 an ideal complement in the person of Jean-Pierre Moueix, a local merchant from a Corrèze family.
This duo with remarkable commercial skills will hoist the estate to the top in the early 1950s. Known in France but above all recognized abroad, Petrus adorns the engagement table of Elisabeth II. In the 1960s, President Kennedy particularly liked it and indirectly made it a reference for the American market. The terroir of Petrus, located on the highest point of the appellation (40 meters) enjoys an excellent situation. The soil, mainly clay, is particularly favorable to Merlot, which constitutes 96% of the vines encépagement. The remaining 4% are planted with Cabernet Franc, most of which is not found in the great wine. The harvest is manual and the aging lasts on average 20 months (100% new oak).
The low acidity of Petrus makes it a soft wine, which, combined with the voluptuous character of Merlot, allows to elaborate a wine of an incredible concentration. It is simply majestic, power and wealth unequaled, some vintages can be kept over fifty years.
