PIO CESARE - BAROLO ORNATO 1990
The winery was founded over a century ago, in 1881 by Cesare Pio, and is now run by his descendants, the Boffa family. The winery sits squarely on top of ancient Roman walls in the heart of the town of Alba. With seventy hectares spread across the region, Pio Cesare have access to superior terroir. This, coupled with their traditional production methods, results in some of the most classic, ageworthy wines here.
Barolo “Ornato” comes from a small selection of “Nebbioli” from the family-owned vineyards of Cascina Ornato in Serralunga d’Alba, one of the most historical and prestigious area of the entire Barolo region. Very well known for great structure, tannins, freshness and longevity. The vinification occurred in stainless steel tanks at high temperatures and is followed by a maceration of 30 days. The ageing is made in “botti” oak for about 30 months with a small amount in French oak for the first 12 months.
The very first Single Vineyard Barolo produced by the Pio Family dates back from 1985 in small quantities.
