Tenuta delle Terre Nere - Etna Calderara Sottana Rosso 2016
Tenuta delle Terre Nere is located in Randazzo, Sicily. The estate is cultivating vineyards on the slopes of Mount Etnasince 2002. It has grown to encompass almost 55 hectares, divided into 24 parcels in six crus, with a total vineyard surface of 27 hectares in production and 7 hectares in breeding. All of Terre Nere's vineyards are farmed organically, with a certification since 2010, and have been since the winery was established. Terre Nere's vineyards range from 600 to 1000 metres above sea level, and are planted on steep slopes. The steepest gradients are closely terraced and need to be worked entirely manually. Many vines are approaching 100 years old and one parcel is more than 130, and was planted before the phylloxera epidemic of the late 19th century. Tenuta delle Terre Nere owns vineyards in six crus: Calderara Sottana, San Lorenzo, Bocca d’Orzo, Santo Spirito, Guardiola, and Feudo di Mezzo.
Calderara Sottana is a Grand Cru made from Nerello Mascalese (98%) and Nerello Cappucio (2%), from vines between 50 and 100 years-old. Ageing is made in large French oak barriques for 16 to 18 months, then 1 month in steel before bottling.
The 2016 vintage turned out to be difficult but despite the climatic challenges encountered, the winemakers who diligently followed their vineyards and worked hard were rewarded with high quality grapes and potentially very fine wines, although in many cases. in many cases, yields below normal. Winter in Sicily was hot and dry. The summer did not bring with it the usual African heat (with the exception of July) or any of the much-desired rains. The three successive years of drought have wreaked havoc in southern Sicily, now dry like the Sahara. Yields were lower due to water stress on the vines, but lower harvest levels allowed the vines to ripen their grapes despite the lack of water. In order to preserve the acidity, the producers started the harvest early. The resulting wines show good body with adequate balancing acidity.
