CLOSED MOGADOR 2019
Le Clos Mogador is located in the Priorat appellation in Catalonia , Spain . In the 19th century, the Barbier family owned some 1,500 hectares of vines in an estate called Le Martinet across three appellations (Plan de Dieu, Rasteau and Gigondas) in Vaucluse, France. In 1880, phylloxera ravaged the vineyards of France, so Léon Barbier was forced to source his grapes from Spain. In 1979, René Barbier , his wife Isabelle Meyer and their children René IV, Céline then Christian and Andersen, acquired a few hectares of Grenache near Gratallops in the DO Priorat; this is the birth of Clos Mogador.
The fruit comes from the estate's original vineyard on the characteristic local llicorella soil, composed of partially decomposed slate and quartz. It dominates Grenache with smaller amounts of Carignan, Syrah and Cabernet Sauvignon .
The red wines are fermented with natural yeasts in open barrels and wooden vats and aged in a mixture of old and new barrels. The estate's vineyards have been certified organic since 2012.
Clos Mogador 2019 is a blend of Grenache (45%), Carignan (29%), Syrah (16%) and Cabernet Sauvignon (10%) coming entirely from the Clos Mogador vineyard. The wine is aged for 18 months in 300 liter barrels and 2,000 liter tuns.
Grapes: 45% Grenache, 29% Carignan, 16% Syrah, 10% Cabernet Sauvignon
