Seña - 2009
Viña Seña is located in Panquehue, in the Aconcagua Valley in Chile . The estate was created as a collaborative venture in Chile between Viña Errázuriz and Robert Mondavi . Since 2005, Seña has been wholly owned by the Chadwick family (owners of Errázuriz) and is the personal project of Eduardo Chadwick. The vineyard has 42 hectares of vines cultivated according to biodynamic principles since 2015. Eduardo's ambition is to create an iconic Chilean wine, with the inaugural vintage of Seña released in 1995.
The wine is a blend of Cabernet Sauvignon (54%), Carménère (21%), Merlot (16%), Petit Verdot (6%) and Cabernet Franc (3%) . Seña grapes come from the Seña Hillside vineyards in the Aconcagua Valley. The wine is aged for 22 months in brand new French oak barrels . The 2009 vintage was marked by its strong heat throughout the season. It began with an early bud burst in very healthy conditions and very uniform flowering. January being the hottest month of the season, the biggest challenge for the viticultural team was to ensure the hydration of the vine and to protect the fruit with a good management of the canopy, ensuring a good progress of veraison. . The trend towards warm temperatures continued and favored excellent ripening of the grapes which particularly favored the Carménère variety, achieving perfect phenolic ripening in balance with good levels of sugar accumulation. The harvest started two weeks earlier than the historic dates to deliver a beautiful wine with lots of concentration and richness, fine tannins and juicy acidity.
