Pio Cesare - Barolo - Riserva Speciale 1986
Domaine Pio Cesare is located in Piedmont , Italy . It was created in 1881 by Cesare Pio, is one of the oldest in the region and one of the first to export its Barolo and Barbaresco wines. The estate is still managed by Cesare Pio's descendants today, the Boffa family . The winery is located in the center of the city of Alba and built on the ancient Roman walls of the city. The vineyard covers 70 hectares: 31.78 hectares in Barolo, 26.90 hectares in Barbaresco and 10.35 hectares between these two regions.
The growing season for the 1986 vintage in Piedmont began with an extremely cold, snowy winter that lasted until the onset of spring. Conditions remained poor with May providing good weather until an extremely violent hailstorm hit Barolo, decimating the vineyards, especially those at high altitudes and some growers had to give up harvesting entirely. However, the choppy conditions meant that bud break and flowering were disrupted and delayed as June continued to be cooler than normal, with conditions finally improving towards the end of the month. July, however, brought more rain and warm weather made humidity a problem, but conditions dried up in August and the rest of the summer was finally blessed with good weather that never cooled down. as the harvest approaches. Fortunately, the harvest saw good and largely uneventful conditions.
