Domaine de Clovallon - The Indigènes 2018
Attention it is a UFO! An unidentified wine object. Simply mind blowing and so good. In a small walled garden, Cathrine Roque discovered very old vines, some of which were over 200 years old, when she acquired her estate in 1989. A majority of pre-phylloxeric wines from grape varieties that are sometimes almost extinct: Cinsalt, Pinot noir, Muscat, Terret, Clairette, Alicante, Merlot, Noah, Syrah, Bourboulenc, Cabernet sauvignon, Grenache, Mourvèdre
Catherine ROQUE, architect, realized her dream and acquired in 1989 a 3 ha estate on a little-known and little-prized terroir. The Languedoc varietals do not easily mature on the cold soil of Bédarieux.
The vineyard, seated mainly on dolomitic limestone and shales, is in the form of an amphitheater facing due north. Installed at the end of a valley, the latter brings cold air from the Monts de L'Orb which culminate at an altitude of over 1000m and from the Causse du Larzac. A limestone cliff, to the south, isolates the vineyard from the warm air masses of the coast and marks the end of the Faugères vineyard. The estate now has 12 hectares and Mme ROQUE has just acquired the 4 ha of Mas d'Alezon on the Faugères terroir. Mrs. ROQUE pleads the cause of Pinot Noir with ONIVINS which agrees, after conclusive experiments, to authorize this grape variety in the wines of the Pays d'Oc. The vines are located between 250 and 400m above sea level on dolomitic limestones, geological formations rare in this region and very rich in magnesium.
Grape varieties: Cinsalt, Pinot noir, Muscat, Terret, Clairette, Alicante, Merlot, Noah, Syrah, Bourboulenc, Cabernet sauvignon, Grenache, Mourvèdre
