Founded in 1955 by the Mercian company, Karuizawa was built at the foot of Mount Asama, in the city of Miyota, Japan . Committed to traditional methods, this small distillery produced its Single Malt from the Golden Promise variety of barley that It imported from Scotland. While most of its production was aged in Sherry casks, Karuizawa still has a few Bourbon casks. In 2000, the distillery ceased production and in 2011, it closed its doors for good. Since then, the company Number One Drinks, which has become the owner of the few remaining barrels, is bringing the history of this distillery back to life through its vintage bottlings.
