Domaine du Pelican - Savagnin Ouillé Grand Curoulet 2020
The Domaine du Pélican is located in Montigny-Lès-Arsures, in the Jura . The project was born in Taillevent, a Parisian restaurant, where the sommelier blindly served Guillaume d'Angerville (owner of the great Volnay estate: the Marquis d'Angerville) a bottle of Chardonnay du Jura vintage 2005. Struck by its quality, Guillaume was surprised to discover that the wine was not from Meursault, let alone from the Côte d'Or. This moment was the trigger for an exciting new project. Several visits to the Jura and many tastings later, Guillaume was convinced to buy land in this region. He called on Yves Hérody, a renowned geologist from the Jura, to find the best wine-growing sites. This trip lasted three years and resulted in an agreement with Château de Chavannes in Montigny-Lès-Arsures in 2012 for the purchase and rental of five hectares. Jean-Marc Brignot then sold him an additional five hectares and finally, in 2014, five hectares were rented to Jacques Puffeney, a retired Jura legend. The estate is managed by François Duvivier , who leads a team based permanently in the Jura. The 15 hectares of vines are located between Arbois and Montigny with, among others, the Grand Curoulet and En Barbi plots. The vineyard is certified in organic and biodynamic agriculture .
The Domaine du Pélican bought this plot in 2012 from Jean-Marc Brignot. Before Brignot, it belonged to Robert Aviet , a well-known name in Arbois and among Jura wine lovers. Grand Curoulet is one of the best terroirs in Arbois. It is a plot facing north, located on the side of a hill overlooking Arbois and the plain of the Saône. Grand Curoulet is known to be the place where the first Arbois vines were planted. The harvest is lightly crushed before being pressed and the fermentation takes place in tuns and barrels. A third of the harvest macerates with the skins overnight before being pressed. Half the aging continues in 500-litre barrels (20% of which are one-wine barrels), and half in tuns . Bottling later than in previous vintages (February 2022) helped give this wine its accomplished character. This is the most accomplished non-oxidative Savagnin from the Domaine du Pélican.
Grape variety: 100% Savagnin
