Mayard Vineyards - Clos du Calvaire - Châteauneuf du Pape 2020
Le Clos du Calvaire is located in the Châteauneuf-du-Pape appellation, in the southern Rhône . The estate was founded in 1923 by Alphonse Mayard and Marie Louise Deydier. Their son, Maurice Mayard, inherited half of the family property in 1976. He invests in the land and expands the estate in 1989 with the acquisition of 17 hectares and raises the entire property to 43 hectares, 10 of which are rented. In 2021, the Mayard family separates so that each brother and sister can take charge of the projects that drive them. Françoise Roumieux Mayard, surrounded by her son Nicolas and her daughter Coline, takes over the management of the estate. The vineyard has been certified organic since 2020.
This cuvée is a blend of Grenache (55%), Syrah (25%), Mourvèdre (15%), Cinsault and Counoise (5%) . The average age of the vines is 50 years. The harvest is manual and the grapes are sorted on the plot and then in the cellar. It is trodden and scratched then vatted by gravity. Co-fermentations are carried out and the maceration lasts between 20 and 25 days in concrete vats of 50 to 100 hectolitres. Load shedding and pumping over are carried out for the extraction. The wine is aged for 12 months in stainless steel vats and tuns .
